Diogo MArtins

Diogo Martins (1999) graduated with the highest grade from CODARTS Rotterdam - The Netherlands (Master’s degree) under the guidance of Joachim Eijlander, and from the Superior School of Applied Arts - Portugal (Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees) under the guidance of Miguel Rocha. Throughout his journey, he has taken part in several masterclasses with renowned cellists such as Ophe lie Gaillard, Xavier Gagnepain, Varoujan Bartikian, Andrew Fuller, and Catherine Strynckx.

In September 2023, he premiered his first original solo project Second Voice, based on the works of the Portuguese singer-songwriter Jose Afonso (1929-87). Since then he has performed solo in venues such as TivoliVredenburg (Utrecht, The Netherlands) and De Doelen (Rotterdam, The Netherlands), as well as at festivals including À Corda Cello Festival (Coimbra) and the International Cello Festival Zutphen (The Netherlands). He also performed as a soloist with the Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras (Portugal) in 2017, as the winner of the Lapa do Lobo Foundation’s Young Soloist Competition.

He is a founding member of the Quartz Quintet, a group with which he won 1st and 2nd prizes in the Folefest Competition (2019 and 2018 respectively), and 2nd place in the Young Musicians Prize, Antena 2 – 2021. With the Quartz Quintet, he has performed at festivals as the À Corda Cello Festival and the Madeira Chamber Music Festival, and in venues such as Casa da Música (Porto), and is the dedicatee of three pieces recorded on the CD Raiz do Som 1.

Diogo Martins frequently collaborates with the Doelen Ensemble (The Netherlands) and the Portuguese Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2022, he served as principal cellist in the opera Die Fledermaus in Berlin (Germany), during the Berlin Opera Academy. Since 2023, he has collaborated with the Neue Philharmonie München (Germany) and the FAME’S European Orchestral Performing Institute (North Macedonia).
